Danyan Leng

Pronouns: She/Her/Hers

Growing up in Beijing, one of China's most populated and urbanized cities, I am always curious about understanding the human-wildlife relationships in areas experiencing intense land use modification. I am passionate about using interdisciplinary methods to promote inclusive conservation approaches and supporting underrepresented communities to get involved in conservation and decision-making.

My work has taken me to various locations in the U.S., China, and Africa, where I have gained valuable research experiences and insights into the complex challenges of international wildlife conservation.

I recently graduated from Yale School of the Environment, where I earned my Master of Environmental Management in 2022. During my time at Yale, I focused on ecosystem management and conservation. I have completed relevant coursework and research in international conservation, wildlife movement ecology, environmental data science, and geographic modeling.

Prior to Yale, I received my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Economics from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. My undergraduate study centered on conservation biology, econometrics, and quantitative science in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife.

As a Postgraduate Associate at the Yale Center for Biodiversity and Global Change, I worked for the Map of Life and Half-Earth Project. My primary responsibilities included compiling and synthesizing global-scale biodiversity and geospatial data using tools such as ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine, R, and Python for conservation. My role also involved analyzing biodiversity data using prioritization algorithms and indicators, as well as combining socioeconomic data to inform conservation activities around the world.

Footprints Africa
2021

I was a remote summer intern at Footprints Africa, a Registered UK Charity based in Accra, Ghana. I worked with the science team to collect and review circular economy case studies across Africa. We used these case studies to build an open database that provides a strong platform for international collaboration among circular businesses. Throughout my internship, I also participated in the B Impact Assessment and created a research guideline for my team, which helped me gain valuable insights into project planning and management.

China Ocean Institute LLC
2018 - 2020

During my time as a research assistant at China Ocean Institute (COI), a Seattle-based consulting firm, I undertook research on Chinese fisheries and marine conservation policy based on both qualitative and quantitative data collected from fieldwork, interview, and literature review. My research primarily focuses on providing case study analysis and implementation tests for policies that were recently initiated in China to increase sustainability in distant-water fishing and marine conservation. My team and I aimed to help international collaborators better understand China’s evolving relationship with the world’s oceans.

Personal Life and Hobbies

I love collecting things and the biggest collection I have so far is fridge magnets. I found magnet is the most fun and portable item to collect while traveling. I enjoy visiting the local souvenir shops to find unique and rare magnets or collect the materials to make my own.

In my free time, I like cooking and baking. I am also a big fan of cozy video games!
